▫️ Why Tesla's 70% surge in 2020 had nothing to do with cars

Tariffs, sanctions, strategic reserve actions: executive orders now move the S&P faster than any Fed decision. The transmission speed has changed.

▫️ THE CORE TOPIC

A generation ago, picking stocks meant studying companies. Investors read the 10-K. They called the CFO. They ran the numbers. Better information won.

That world is gone. Passive index funds now hold roughly half of all U.S. equity assets. When a stock joins the S&P 500 or MSCI Standard Index, the buying isn't a recommendation. It's a mechanical requirement. Funds must purchase, regardless of price.

The decision moved upstream. Index providers - S&P Dow Jones, MSCI, FTSE Russell - now control what billions of dollars buy. A methodology change in their office reshapes capital flows around the world.

This is why the question "what comes beyond SpaceX" matters less than "what gets added to the next index reshuffle." That's where the forced buying happens.

▫️ THE MECHANISM

The mechanism runs on rules, not judgment.

  • The Rebalance Window. Index providers announce changes weeks ahead. Funds tracking that index must complete trades by close on inclusion day.
  • The Price-Insensitive Buyer. Vanguard's index team doesn't ask whether a stock is cheap. The methodology says buy, so they buy.
  • The Liquidity Spike. Inclusion days see 5-10x normal volume. SpaceX joining the MSCI Standard Index right after its June 12 debut produced exactly that wall of flows.
  • The Mirror Effect. Once inside the index, the stock moves with the index, not just earnings. Gold has its own calendar - central bank purchases, ETF rebalances - and structure-aware capital tracks those dates the same way.

Rules-based buyers move first. Everyone else trades around them.

▫️ THE CASE FILE

Tesla joined the S&P 500. Announced November 16, 2020. Effective December 21, 2020. In the 35 trading days between announcement and inclusion, the stock ran from roughly $408 to $695 - a gain of about 70%. Earnings did not change. The product line did not change. The only thing that changed was the calendar. S&P Dow Jones Indices estimated index funds had to purchase more than $50 billion of Tesla shares before inclusion day. They did. The price reflected forced demand, not fundamentals. Active investors who understood the mechanism front-ran the buying.

▫️ THE PRESSURE TEST

  • The crowd at the door. Active traders front-run inclusion. By the time forced buying actually arrives, much of the move has already been priced in.
  • Removal works in reverse. Stocks removed from indexes face mechanical selling. The same mechanism that pushes prices up can pull them down with equal force.
  • Methodology changes. Index rules can be rewritten. An expected inclusion can be delayed or denied if criteria shift.
  • Liquidity illusion. Heavy passive demand can mask weak underlying interest, until the calendar runs out.

Investors who learn these flows aren't trying to predict the market. They're reading a published schedule that determines where the next wave of capital must go.

▫️ AUTHOR'S LENS

I learned this in the Chicago pits in 1995. Index funds were still small then, but you could already see the buying arrive before the official inclusion. Someone always knew.
Today the mechanism is bigger and slower. Passive flows are public. The calendar is public. If you understand the schedule, you're never the last one in the room.
Build the structure. Ignore the noise.
