## ▫️ THE CORE TOPIC

For most of the last century, the path was simple. Work hard, earn a wage, save the surplus in cash, and get ahead. Effort and patience were enough, because the dollar you saved roughly held its value.

That formula has broken. Assets - stocks, gold, real estate - now rise faster than wages, year after year. Cash, the supposedly safe choice, loses ground to inflation while asset owners pull away. The distance between those who own and those who only earn has widened into a chasm.

The driver is money itself. Each cycle of expansion and deficit spending creates new dollars, and those dollars flow into assets first. The price of scarce things rises, while the paycheck arrives last and buys less than it did before.

This is why investors now reach for ownership earlier and earlier, even for pre-IPO stakes, to stand on the owning side of the line. For your capital, the lesson is blunt. In this system you want to own the assets, not only earn the income.

## ▫️ THE MECHANISM

The gap between owning and earning widens through a few connected gears.

- **Money reaches assets first.** When new money enters the system, it flows to investors and asset markets before it reaches wages, lifting prices on the way in.
- **Scarcity rewards owners.** There is only so much gold, prime land, and equity in great businesses. More money chasing the same scarce assets pushes their prices up.
- **Wages lag by design.** Pay adjusts slowly and last, so earners feel higher prices long before they ever see a higher paycheck.
- **Policy amplifies it.** Big government moves can unleash waves of new wealth, and that wealth lands on asset owners first, which is why well-known investors position themselves ahead of the announcement.

The system does not reward saving cash. It rewards owning the scarce things that cash is printed against, the assets that hold their value when the dollar does not.

## ▫️ THE CASE FILE

The clearest proof came after 2008\. To fight the crisis, central banks created trillions in new money and held interest rates near zero for years.

The money went where money goes. From its March 2009 low to early 2020, the S&P 500 rose more than 400 percent. Home prices roughly doubled over the following decade, and gold climbed from under $1,000 to well over $1,500\. Real median wages, meanwhile, barely moved across the same stretch.

Anyone who owned assets compounded a fortune. Anyone who only earned and saved in cash watched the finish line drift further away with each passing year.

## ▫️ THE PRESSURE TEST

- **Assets can correct hard.** Owning is not a free ride. The prices that inflate fastest can also fall fastest, as 2022 reminded everyone.
- **Leverage cuts both ways.** Borrowing to own amplifies the gains on the way up and the losses on the way down. Ownership without staying power is a trap.
- **Not all assets are equal.** A speculative stock and a bar of gold are both called assets, but they behave nothing alike under real stress.
- **Price still matters.** Buying a scarce asset at any cost is not the same as buying it at a sensible one.

None of this changes the core truth. Over a full cycle, the people who own real, scarce assets keep their wealth, while those who hold only cash watch it slip away.

## ▫️ AUTHOR'S LENS

| I learned this watching friends who did everything right. They worked, they saved, they kept their money safe in cash. And every year the house they wanted and the life they pictured drifted a little further out of reach. The system is not fair, but it is knowable. I stopped trying to out-save a printing press a long time ago. I own the scarce things it cannot print, and I let the math work for me instead of against me.Build the structure. Ignore the noise. | ![Marcus Grant](https://storage.ghost.io/c/8c/09/8c09bf02-2863-4e2f-9427-328b96b722da/content/images/2026/08/for_lens_-t-1769788746-41.png) |
