## ▫️ THE CORE TOPIC

The American stock market is shut for most of every week. That reads like a mistake, so check the arithmetic.

The core session runs six and a half hours a day, five days a week. Add the extended sessions and the equity infrastructure has, for about twenty years, accommodated trading [between 4 AM and 8 PM ET](https://www.sec.gov/newsroom/speeches-statements/selway-remarks-sifma-roundtable-012826?utm%5Fsource=core-sector.beehiiv.com&utm%5Fmedium=referral&utm%5Fcampaign=washington-is-about-to-make-the-stock-market-almost-never-close). Everything outside that window is closed.

The world does not observe those hours. Elections are decided overnight. Conflicts begin at weekends. Companies file after the bell precisely because the bell has rung.

That leaves a permanent mismatch between when events occur and when you are able to respond to them. The exchange is not a window onto the world. It is a shutter that opens on a timetable.

Regulators have noticed. The Commission approved an overnight session in November 2024, has since approved longer hours at NYSE Arca, and a Nasdaq proposal is out for comment.

Ideas about what to own arrive at every hour. The hours in which you can act on them do not move.

## ▫️ THE MECHANISM

Four consequences follow from a market that keeps office hours.

- **The closed time is most of the time.** The NYSE core session runs [9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET](https://www.nyse.com/trade/hours-calendars?utm%5Fsource=core-sector.beehiiv.com&utm%5Fmedium=referral&utm%5Fcampaign=washington-is-about-to-make-the-stock-market-almost-never-close), which is under a third of a weekday and none of a Saturday.
- **A shut market stores risk rather than removing it.** Nothing that happens overnight gets cancelled. It accumulates and is delivered in one piece at the opening auction.
- **Prices jump instead of travelling.** With the book closed, a move that would have played out gradually arrives as a single gap between the last close and the first print, and nobody trades through a gap.
- **Not every venue keeps the same clock.** Futures and foreign exchange run far longer sessions, so the same news is being priced somewhere while your own market sits dark.

Warnings about what the coming months hold are worth reading on their merits. Whatever any particular one turns out to be worth, it will arrive on its own timetable rather than on the exchange's.

## ▫️ THE CASE FILE

The gravest American example settles the point. On 11 September 2001 the exchange had not yet opened when the attacks began. Its building was damaged and its power and telephone lines severed. [Trading did not resume until Monday](https://www.federalreservehistory.org/essays/september-11?utm%5Fsource=core-sector.beehiiv.com&utm%5Fmedium=referral&utm%5Fcampaign=washington-is-about-to-make-the-stock-market-almost-never-close), 17 September, four sessions later.

Less remembered is that the shutdown was never uniform. Testifying to the Senate days later, the Commission's Chairman recorded that [the fixed income and futures markets](https://www.sec.gov/news/testimony/092001tshlp.htm?utm%5Fsource=core-sector.beehiiv.com&utm%5Fmedium=referral&utm%5Fcampaign=washington-is-about-to-make-the-stock-market-almost-never-close) resumed on the Thursday, three days ahead of equities.

For those three days Treasuries had a live price and the shares of their issuers had none. One country, one set of facts, two clocks. The market is not one thing that is open or shut. It is a collection of venues, each with its own switch.

## ▫️ THE PRESSURE TEST

- **Closed hours protect as often as they trap.** A shut market cannot be panic-sold at three in the morning, and forced selling into a thin book has damaged more accounts than any gap.
- **Round the clock is not the same as liquid.** A venue open with almost nobody in it quotes a wide spread, and the number on screen at 3 a.m. is not the one you would receive.
- **Most portfolios do not need the extra hours.** If a holding requires you to be awake for it, the position was probably the wrong size.
- **The clock is not the real edge.** Being first matters far less than not being last, and few lose money because their exchange shut at four.

The practical response is not to watch more hours. It is to know which holdings can be repriced while you sleep, then to hold them in a size where the answer does not keep you up.

## ▫️ AUTHOR'S LENS

| Early on I ran a book that looked balanced at four o'clock and was nothing of the kind by nine the following morning. Not a single trade had been made in between. The world had simply carried on without consulting anybody. That cured me of treating the close as the end of something. It is a pause in the recording, not a pause in events. The tape keeps running whether or not there is anyone there to write it down.Build the structure. Ignore the noise. | ![Marcus Grant](https://storage.ghost.io/c/8c/09/8c09bf02-2863-4e2f-9427-328b96b722da/content/images/2026/08/for_lens_-t-1769788746-2.png) |
