## ▪️ CAPITAL BACKBONE

Gold consolidated through the week. The metal opened Monday at $4,545, traded near $4,485 midweek, then corrected Friday after the surprise NFP print to close at $4,338\. The floor under $4,338 held into the weekend.

Silver tracked the same pattern, settling in the $61-$63 range. Industrial demand from solar build-out and grid expansion remains structural. The PHLX Gold/Silver mining index corrected 3.73% on the week alongside the broader tech sell-off.

Central banks have not paused buying. The Friday correction in gold on a hot jobs print is what consolidation looks like in a rate-fear regime. The foundation strengthens in these zones.

## ▪️ THE ENTRY POINT

On Friday, the Labor Department reported May nonfarm payrolls of 172,000, more than double the 80,000 consensus. Unemployment held at 4.3%.

Markets did not celebrate. The S&P 500 fell 2.64% to 7,383.74, its worst day since October. The Nasdaq dropped 4.18% to 25,709.43, the worst session since April 2025\. The semiconductor index lost over 10% in a single day, erasing more than $1 trillion in chip market value. Broadcom had held its AI chip outlook flat on Wednesday, which started the rout.

Treasury yields surged on rate-hike repricing. Gold corrected on the same data.

## ▪️ STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

***The hard version:*** May NFP printed 172,000 against an 80,000 consensus, with unemployment steady at 4.3%. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped above 4.50% on the print. Broadcom (AVGO) on Wednesday kept its 2026 AI chip target flat, triggering a 10% one-day SOX decline Friday. Nvidia (NVDA) fell with the group. The week ended the S&P's nine-week winning streak. Some economists tied the strong payroll to FIFA World Cup hiring ahead of the June 11 opener.

***Plain language:*** The jobs report was too good. Yields jumped. Chips collapsed.

For hard assets, the regime is shifting. When good economic news triggers a tech sell-off, the AI rally was carrying more rate sensitivity than the price implied.

## ▪️ INDEX BEARINGS

*Numbers show Friday market close. Weekly percentages show week-over-week change.*

## ▪️ WHAT MATTERS / WHAT DOESN'T

**What matters: The Nasdaq's 4.18% Friday drop and the trillion-dollar SOX wipeout.**

The semiconductor index lost more than $1 trillion in a single session on June 5\. That is the largest concentrated chip loss since the April 2025 tariff panic. Broadcom's flat AI chip guidance broke the assumption that AI capex would keep rising linearly.

This is structural because the SOX has carried the broader rally since 2024\. When the index that leads the index turns, the whole foundation gets retested. CPI prints Wednesday.

**What doesn't: The day-to-day FIFA World Cup hiring debate.**

Some analysts attributed half the May payroll surprise to World Cup-related hiring ahead of the June 11 opener. By Sunday, the framing had shifted twice. The underlying number was strong regardless of the cause.

Whether the surge is World Cup or organic does not change what the bond market did Friday. Yields surged. The cause is interesting trivia. The reaction is the signal.

## ▪️ MARKET BEARINGS

**Broadcom** [$AVGO ( ▼ 1.42% )](https://stocktwits.com/symbol/AVGO?utm%5Fsource=core-sector.beehiiv.com&utm%5Fmedium=referral&utm%5Fcampaign=the-nasdaq-just-had-its-worst-day-since-april-2025-the-cpi-drops-tomorrow) Triggered the entire week's sell-off after holding its full-year AI chip revenue target flat on its Wednesday earnings call. The stock declined sharply Thursday and Friday, dragging the SOX with it. The structural read: the market had priced perpetual upward revisions to AI capex. A flat guide was enough to break that assumption.

**Nvidia** [$NVDA ( ▼ 3.33% )](https://stocktwits.com/symbol/NVDA?utm%5Fsource=core-sector.beehiiv.com&utm%5Fmedium=referral&utm%5Fcampaign=the-nasdaq-just-had-its-worst-day-since-april-2025-the-cpi-drops-tomorrow) Fell hard with the chip group on Friday despite no company-specific news. As the largest weight in the SOX, NVDA carries the full leverage of the AI trade in both directions, up and down.

**Alphabet** [$GOOGL ( ▲ 2.04% )](https://stocktwits.com/symbol/GOOGL?utm%5Fsource=core-sector.beehiiv.com&utm%5Fmedium=referral&utm%5Fcampaign=the-nasdaq-just-had-its-worst-day-since-april-2025-the-cpi-drops-tomorrow) Held up far better than peers, closing near $366 Friday with only a 1.0% decline. Its prior equity-raise sell-off had already absorbed the bad news. Sometimes the stocks that have already corrected weather the storm best.

## ▪️ AUTHOR'S LENS

| Marcus Grant, The Strategist: I have seen nine-week streaks end before. They rarely end on the same news that fed them. May NFP at 172,000 should have been bullish for stocks. The Nasdaq fell 4.18%. That is the signal I track when news and price move opposite directions.I am not panicking. The AI trade was leveraged to falling yields, and yields just stopped falling. | ![Marcus Grant](https://storage.ghost.io/c/8c/09/8c09bf02-2863-4e2f-9427-328b96b722da/content/images/2026/08/for_lens_-t-1769788746-53.png) |

Nasdaq 25,709.43, down 4.18% Friday. SOX down over 10% on the session. S&P 7,383.74, first losing week in ten. One trillion in chip market value erased in a day.The bond market told the truth: yields surged on the jobs print. Stocks heard it second. I keep my eyes on Wednesday's CPI. |
