## ▫️ THE CORE TOPIC

We treat the dollar as a fixed measuring stick. A dollar is a dollar; prices go up, but the ruler itself feels permanent. It is the water we swim in, and we rarely stop to question it.

History says the ruler shrinks. Every paper currency ever created has lost value, and most have died outright. The dollar has lost roughly 96 percent of its purchasing power since 1913\. When you hear that a policy will "unleash trillions in new wealth," history suggests much of that is simply new currency, which dilutes every dollar already in your pocket.

The driver never changes. A government that controls its own money will, eventually, create more of it to pay its bills. Debasement is the path of least resistance, and no political system has ever resisted it for long.

For your capital, the lesson is to separate the measuring stick from the thing being measured. Price your wealth in what lasts, not in a unit designed to shrink. The dollar is the variable. You want to own the constant.

## ▫️ THE MECHANISM

Debasement erodes your money through a few connected gears.

- **The hidden tax.** Printing or clipping money is a tax no one votes on. It transfers value from savers to the government without a single ballot cast, and most people never feel the theft while it happens.
- **The path of least resistance.** Raising taxes is unpopular and slow; creating money is quick and easy. Every government eventually chooses the second one.
- **The lag before it shows.** New money lifts prices only over time, so leaders take the credit early and hand the inflation to their successors, long after the spending that caused it is forgotten.
- **The reprice of real things.** As the currency thins, tangible assets, gold, silver, land, and minerals, reprice upward. A real reserve holds its value precisely because it cannot be printed.

The currency is the variable. What survives is whatever the government cannot create.

## ▫️ THE CASE FILE

Germany in 1923 is the sharpest lesson. To pay its debts after the First World War, the government printed money without limit. What followed was one of history's great collapses of a currency.

By November 1923, it took about 4.2 trillion marks to buy a single U.S. dollar. Prices doubled every few days. A lifetime of savings held in marks bought a loaf of bread, then bought nothing at all. The middle class that trusted paper was wiped out.

But not everyone was ruined. Those who held gold, foreign currency, or real assets walked through the fire with their wealth intact. The paper died. The tangible endured. It always has.

## ▫️ THE PRESSURE TEST

- **It can take decades.** Debasement is usually slow. Betting on a collapse can mean waiting a very long time while nothing seems to happen.
- **Strong-dollar spells are real.** For years at a stretch the dollar can rise and hard assets can lag. The trend is never a straight line.
- **The dollar still rules.** As the world's reserve currency, the dollar has real staying power and will not vanish tomorrow. This is erosion, not an overnight event.
- **Timing is not the point.** The pattern tells you what to own, not when the next move comes. Confusing the two is how people get hurt.

The takeaway is patience with the right anchor. Across every currency that has ever risen and fallen, gold has kept its value. Hold the constant, and let the variable do what it has always done.

## ▫️ AUTHOR'S LENS

| I stopped thinking of the dollar as a store of value a long time ago. It is a useful tool for spending, nothing more. I have watched it buy less in every decade of my life, steadily and without pause, exactly as the history books promised. So I keep my score in something older than any government. I measure my wealth in ounces, not in dollars, and I let the paper do what paper has always done. That habit has never once let me down.Build the structure. Ignore the noise. | ![Marcus Grant](https://storage.ghost.io/c/8c/09/8c09bf02-2863-4e2f-9427-328b96b722da/content/images/2026/08/for_lens_-t-1769788746-37.png) |
