## THE CORE TOPIC

For most of the market's history, a listed company was simply a listed company. Share price times share count gave you the value, and you assumed those shares could change hands. Supply and demand met in the open.

That assumption no longer holds at the very top of the market. The largest businesses now reach the public through a narrow door. A company can carry a valuation in the trillions while [only a small fraction of its shares ever trades](https://www.spglobal.com/spdji/en/documents/index-policies/methodology-sp-float-adjustment.pdf?utm%5Fsource=core-sector.beehiiv.com&utm%5Fmedium=referral&utm%5Fcampaign=the-biggest-listing-ever-is-coming-ask-how-much-actually-sells), and the long-awaited listing that many expect to be the largest on record would follow the same pattern.

The driver is arithmetic. A price is set at the margin, by the last share exchanged. When only a sliver of a company trades, a modest amount of money moves that price a long way, and the entire valuation follows the sliver.

For your capital, this changes what a headline number means. A trillion-dollar market value built on a thin float is not the same as one built on shares anyone can buy.

## THE MECHANISM

A thin float works through a few connected gears.

- **Price is set at the margin.** The last trade values every share, including the ones locked away. A small pool of traded stock can carry an enormous headline number behind it.
- **Index buyers have no choice.** When a company enters an index, funds that track it must buy, and they buy from a supply that was already small.
- **The size is often a decision.** How much of a company reaches public hands is frequently a government or founder call rather than a market one, which is why people who follow policy closely watch the size of an offering as carefully as its price.
- **The float widens later.** Restrictions lift over time and the sliver grows. The scarcity that lifted the price fades as more shares arrive.

A small float is not a valuation. It is a condition, and conditions change.

## THE CASE FILE

Saudi Arabia's national oil company gave the clearest demonstration on record. In December 2019, Aramco listed on the Tadawul exchange in Riyadh and sold about 1.5% of itself.

The offering priced at 32 riyals a share, or $8.53, and [raised $25.6 billion](https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/05/investing/saudi-aramco-ipo-price/index.html?utm%5Fsource=core-sector.beehiiv.com&utm%5Fmedium=referral&utm%5Fcampaign=the-biggest-listing-ever-is-coming-ask-how-much-actually-sells). That beat Alibaba's $25 billion in 2014 to become the largest listing in history. It implied a value of $1.7 trillion for the whole company.

Then the sliver did its work. On the second day of trading, Aramco's market value reached $2 trillion, the most of any listed company in the world. Roughly 98.5% of it had never traded at all.

## THE PRESSURE TEST

- **It cuts both ways.** Thin supply lifts a price quickly and can reverse it just as quickly. The same mechanism runs in the opposite direction.
- **Index inclusion is not automatic.** Exchanges and index providers often require a minimum share of stock in public hands, so the forced buying may never arrive at all.
- **More shares are usually coming.** Restrictions lift on a schedule. Supply that was held back tends to return to the market eventually.
- **The headline flatters.** A trillion-dollar figure built on a sliver describes the last trade, not what the whole company would fetch.

This is why we keep a foundation that carries no float at all. An ounce of gold is worth what it is worth, whether one ounce changes hands that day or a million do.

## AUTHOR'S LENS

| I learned this in the pits, where a thin market was its own kind of danger. The quoted price looked solid right up until you tried to move real size through it. Then you found out how few hands were on the other side.So I ask one question before I trust any valuation. How much of this can actually be sold? With gold I never have to ask. It answers the same on any day, in any size.Build the structure. Ignore the noise. | ![Marcus Grant](https://storage.ghost.io/c/8c/09/8c09bf02-2863-4e2f-9427-328b96b722da/content/images/2026/08/for_lens_-t-1769788746-34.png) |
