## ▪️ CAPITAL BACKBONE

Gold consolidated to $4,538 by Friday's close after testing $4,728 Monday and pulling back through the week. The metal posted a roughly 2.6% weekly consolidation as treasury yields spiked and a stronger dollar pressured non-yielding assets. The floor held above $4,480 throughout.

Silver consolidated alongside gold, dropping nearly 8% Friday on the yield spike before recovering. The metal closed near $63 per ounce, holding longer-term support. Industrial demand from semiconductors and energy storage remains structurally firm.

The structural picture stayed intact. Goldman Sachs reaffirmed its $5,400 year-end target. Central bank accumulation has not paused. Mining stocks corrected 2.66% on the week as the 10-year hit a one-year high of 4.55%.

## ▪️ THE ENTRY POINT

On Tuesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported headline CPI at 3.8% year-over-year, the hottest reading since May 2023\. Core PPI followed Wednesday at 1.0% month-over-month, the biggest monthly gain in four years. Wholesale services jumped 1.2%.

Markets repriced. Fed rate hike odds for 2026 climbed from 1% a month ago to 45% by Friday. The 10-year Treasury yield broke 4.50% for the first time in a year. The 30-year crossed back above 5%.

Gold consolidated rather than rallied on the inflation shock. That divergence reveals the structural pressure: real yields are climbing faster than inflation. Hard assets are absorbing the transition.

## ▪️ STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

***The hard version:*** Kevin Warsh was sworn in as Fed Chair Friday May 15, ending Powell's eight-year tenure. Two hot inflation prints this week pushed Fed rate cut probability to zero. Markets now price 45% odds of a rate hike in 2026, targeting 3.75-4.00%. Powell remains on the Board of Governors, denying Trump a third board seat. Three April FOMC dissenters are positioned to push Warsh hawkish.

***Plain language:*** The new Chair starts Monday. His committee thinks rates may rise, not fall. The opposite of what the White House expected.

For hard assets, the implication is structural. A Fed that may hike with stagflation pressure keeps gold consolidated short-term but builds the next leg of demand.

## ▪️ WHAT MATTERS / WHAT DOESN'T

**What matters: The Powell-to-Warsh hand-off into a hawkish Fed.**

Warsh inherits the box. Inflation reaccelerated to 3.8% just as he takes the chair. Three of his ten committee members already dissented at the April meeting. Markets are pricing the first rate hike of his tenure rather than the cut Trump expected.

A new Chair with a divided committee and rising inflation is the worst configuration for predictable policy. Volatility in rates, currency, and metals rises from here.

**What doesn't: The Trump-Xi summit headlines.**

President Trump met President Xi in Beijing for two days. Trump called the deals "fantastic." No major agreements were announced.

Markets cheered Wednesday and sold off Friday. The Strait remains closed. WTI sits above $94\. Until Tehran responds materially, summit headlines are noise.

## ▪️ AUTHOR'S LENS

| Marcus Grant, The Strategist: Warsh inherits an inflation problem he cannot solve with rate moves. Three committee members already dissent. Powell stays on the board. I have seen new Fed Chairs walk into easier setups in 1987, 2000, and 2018.I am watching how Warsh handles his first public remarks. The Treasury curve will move sharply on the smallest deviation from Powell's vocabulary. | ![Marcus Grant](https://storage.ghost.io/c/8c/09/8c09bf02-2863-4e2f-9427-328b96b722da/content/images/2026/08/for_lens_-t-1769788746-63.png) |

CPI at 3.8%. Core PPI up 1.0% in a month. 10-year yield at 4.55%. Russell 2000 down 2.37%, breaking a seven-week winning streak.I am watching Nvidia Wednesday. Consensus is $78 billion revenue and $1.77 EPS. A miss compresses the whole tape. A beat extends a rally breadth no longer supports. |
