▪️ THE ENTRY POINT

The week's defining force was the dollar. A hawkish Federal Reserve under Kevin Warsh and a dollar index that cleared 100 to a 13-month high pulled the safe-haven bid out of gold. Gold corrected hard, testing $3,964 intraday on Wednesday.

Then the floor held. On Friday a softer inflation reading, the Fed's preferred PCE gauge rising less than expected, eased the pressure. Gold rebounded 1.6 percent to close the week at $4,079.

The lesson sits in the bounce, not the dip. A surging dollar could bend gold this week, but it could not break it.

Dollar tide, gold holds

▪️ CAPITAL BACKBONE

Gold entered the week firm at $4,189, then slid three sessions as the dollar surged, closing near $4,010 on Wednesday after testing $3,964 intraday. The full swing ran from $4,189 down to that low and back, a wide but orderly correction. Friday's soft inflation print turned it, and gold finished at $4,079, a 1.8 percent consolidation for the week.

Silver fell harder, sliding roughly 5 percent toward $58 as the same dollar strength drained the trade.

Under the surface, the structural bid held. Central banks have bought through every dip this cycle, and the floor near $4,000 marks where that demand keeps showing up.

▪️ STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

The hard version: The dollar index cleared 100 for the first time in 13 months as the Warsh-era Fed signaled rates stay high, with markets pricing roughly a 68 percent chance of a hike by September. A rising dollar makes gold more expensive abroad and lifts the real return on cash, both headwinds for the metal. All three down sessions traced to one cause: a dollar that would not stop climbing.

Plain language: When the dollar pays you more to hold it, gold has to fight harder for attention. This week the dollar won the first three rounds.

But the metal still closed above $4,000. The floor that matters held, and a single soft inflation print was enough to turn the tape.

▪️ WHAT MATTERS / WHAT DOESN'T

What matters: the dollar broke out to a 13-month high.

A stronger dollar is the single biggest weight on hard assets and on the earnings of global companies. It pressures gold, commodities, and exporters all at once, and it tightens financial conditions without the Fed lifting a finger. The index cleared 100 for the first time since spring 2025. This is the structural story of the week, and a move this size does not reverse on one data point.

What doesn't: the daily noise around AI valuations.

Tech wobbled, the Nasdaq fell for a fifth straight session, and headlines warned that OpenAI may delay its IPO. The mood shifts by the hour, and each new report moves the tape for an afternoon before fading.

The structural question is simpler: can the largest names keep growing into their prices. One nervous week does not answer it. Watch the dollar, not the daily AI mood swings.

▪️ MARKET BEARINGS

ON Semiconductor $ON ( ▼ 2.69% ) Shares fell about 23 percent after announcing a $7 billion deal for Synaptics. In a week when investors questioned chip valuations, the market punished a large debt-funded bet rather than rewarding the ambition, a sign of how fast the tape now turns on leverage.

Moderna $MRNA ( ▼ 3.61% ) The stock jumped about 12 percent Friday after its investor day, which included a new in-vivo cell-therapy program. With money rotating out of crowded tech, a beaten-down name with a fresh catalyst drew the flows.

Micron $MU ( ▼ 1.89% ) The memory maker was the week's key test of real AI demand, carrying the highest implied volatility in the S&P 500 into its earnings. How its chips sell signals whether the AI buildout is still accelerating.

▪️ AUTHOR'S LENS

Marcus Grant, The Strategist: I have watched the dollar punish gold a hundred times since the 1980s. It works until it does not. This week the dollar hit a 13-month high, real yields rose, and gold still closed above $4,000. That is not weakness. That is a floor being tested under real pressure and holding its ground.

Susan Price
Susan Price, The Auditor: I read the week in two numbers. The dollar broke out, and gold gave back only 1.8 percent against it. Meanwhile the Nasdaq lost 4.6 percent as the AI trade wobbled and chip names led the way down. The metal corrected in an orderly way; the crowded trade cracked. That tells me where the real risk is sitting, and it is not in the gold column.
