When a seller lends the buyer the money to purchase its product, the sale can be an illusion.

▫️ THE CORE TOPIC
Revenue used to mean something simple. A company made a product, an unrelated customer paid for it with their own money, and the sale recorded real outside demand. Money entered the business from the world beyond it.
At the top of today's market, that line has blurred. In a pattern called circular financing, a company invests in or lends to its own customers, who then use that money to buy the company's products. In September a leading chipmaker agreed to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, a customer that would deploy that capital buying its chips. The seller ends up funding its own sales, which is exactly the fragility some now warn is building under the largest artificial-intelligence names.
The driver is a race for growth. When outside demand cannot expand fast enough, financing the buyer keeps the revenue rising and the story intact.
For your capital, this means reported growth can be partly a loop. The question is no longer only how much a company sells, but whose money is doing the buying.
▫️ THE MECHANISM
Circular financing works through a few connected gears.
- The same dollars count twice. The seller's cash becomes the buyer's purchase, so one pool of money books as revenue on both sides. Little new demand is added.
- The loop flatters everyone in it. Each participant reports rising sales and investment, and the group looks healthier together than any member is alone.
- Interlocking ventures deepen it. When one founder's businesses buy from and fund one another, a whole cluster of ventures can appear to boom on the same recycled capital, the kind of convergence some now sell as a coming windfall.
- The break travels backward. If one customer cannot pay, the loss lands on the financier, whose revenue was that customer's spending in the first place.
A loop can turn slowly for years. It cannot add water that was never poured in.

▫️ THE CASE FILE
The telecom bust of 2000 and 2001 is the clearest precedent. Equipment makers like Lucent lent to the young carriers buying their gear, committing $8.1 billion in what was called vendor financing.
For a while it worked beautifully. Lucent booked the loans as equipment sales, revenue climbed, and the stock soared. Then the carriers ran out of cash. WinStar, one of them, filed for bankruptcy in April 2001 after missing a payment to Lucent.
The loop ran in reverse. Lucent's revenues fell from $30 billion to $12 billion within two years, and the shares that had led the boom lost almost everything. The financed sales had never been real demand.
▫️ THE PRESSURE TEST
- Not every loop is a fraud. A strong company can fund a genuine customer and both prosper. It is a warning sign, not a verdict.
- Loops can run for years. A closed circle can keep turning while outside demand grows into it, so betting on the break too early is costly.
- The risk is hard to see. Circular deals are often disclosed in fragments, and the full loop is clear only after it stops.
- Real demand does exist. Much of the buildout serves paying customers, and separating the real part from the recycled part is the task.
The defense is to own something outside every company's revenue loop. Gold is nobody's customer and nobody's sale, so its worth never depends on the circle.
