▪️ CAPITAL BACKBONE

Gold strengthened its foundation through the week. The metal opened at $4,561.21 on Monday, tested the $4,448 floor midweek as Treasury yields firmed, then rallied hard Thursday and Friday on the PCE print, closing the week at $4,543.39 on Sunday. The floor held above $4,440 throughout.

Silver tracked the same pattern, consolidating in the $63-$66 range and firming alongside gold's recovery. Industrial demand from solar and grid build-out continues to anchor the base.

The structural picture stayed intact. The PHLX Gold/Silver mining index gained 2.19% on the week, outpacing the S&P. Central bank accumulation has not paused. The Friday rally on hot inflation data is the signal.

▪️ THE ENTRY POINT

On Thursday, the Commerce Department reported April PCE inflation at 3.8% year-over-year, the highest reading since May 2023. Core PCE ticked up to 3.3%, above the Fed's 2% target for the 38th straight month.

Stocks set fresh records anyway. The Dow closed Friday at 51,032.46, the first close above 51,000 in history. The S&P 500 posted its ninth straight winning week, the longest since 2023. The Nasdaq gained 8% for the month.

Gold strengthened into the same data. The Friday rally on a hot inflation print is what markets do when they no longer trust the Fed will return inflation to target.

▪️ STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

The hard version: April PCE printed at 3.8% headline, the hottest since May 2023, with core at 3.3%. Energy and shelter were the heaviest contributors. The 10-year Treasury yield closed the week at 4.41%, well off the 4.50% high from two weeks prior, as markets read the data as already priced. Memorial Day shortened trading. Iran ceasefire optimism kept oil down nearly 10% on the week near $88. The Strait of Hormuz remained tense but open.

Plain language: Inflation came in hot. Yields fell anyway. Stocks ran to records.

For hard assets, this is structural. When yields refuse to rise on hot inflation, the bond market is signaling that growth is the bigger fear. Gold reads that early.

▪️ WHAT MATTERS / WHAT DOESN'T

What matters: PCE at 3.8% with markets at records.

The Fed's preferred inflation gauge is now further from the 2% target than at any point since May 2023. The market is pricing a Fed that may be done easing for the year.

A record-high market resting on accelerating inflation is structural tension. When the data forces the Fed to hold, the floor under risk assets depends on earnings alone. That controls the next quarter, not the daily rumor cycle.

What doesn't: The daily Iran ceasefire headlines.

Markets oscillated Wednesday and Thursday on reports a U.S.-Iran ceasefire extension was "near," then "stalled," then "near" again. By Friday oil was down nearly 10% on the week and the Strait of Hormuz stayed open.

The pattern repeats. Until both sides sign and Hormuz traffic fully resumes, the day-to-day reports move the tape without moving the structure.

▪️ MARKET BEARINGS

Dell Technologies $DELL ( ▼ 2.65% ) Surged 33% Friday, its best day on record. The PC and server maker reported Q1 FY27 revenue of $43.8 billion, up 88% year-over-year, with EPS of $5.24, up 282%. AI server orders drove the print. Dell has become the clearest proxy for the AI-hardware buildout outside Nvidia.

Snowflake $SNOW ( ▼ 0.09% ) Climbed roughly 40% across the abbreviated week after earnings. The data-cloud platform is being repriced as essential AI infrastructure rather than a pure software bet. The move added billions in market value over two sessions.

Micron Technology $MU ( ▼ 1.89% ) Added 5% Friday on continued memory-chip strength following Qualcomm's 3% gain. The structural read: AI training and inference workloads need high-bandwidth memory at scale. Old-line memory makers are being repriced as power and data plays inside the AI buildout.

▪️ AUTHOR'S LENS

Marcus Grant, The Strategist: I have watched nine-week win streaks before. Each one feels permanent. None of them lasted forever. The Dow closing above 51,000 on a hot inflation print is the kind of divergence that always resolves.
I am not calling the turn. PCE at 3.8% has not yet forced the Fed's hand, and the crowd is still extrapolating.

Susan Price, The Auditor: The math says records with a warning underneath. Dow 51,032.46. S&P 7,580.06, ninth straight green week. NASDAQ 26,972.62, up 8% in May alone.
I am watching this week's Fed minutes against the PCE print. The bond market did not panic on 3.8%. Yields actually fell. That is the data point I track. I keep my eyes on the floor.
